Our Mass Spectrometers

Hometown Heroes

Our mass spectrometers are the unsung heroes of the Pagliarini Lab - without them, our research wouldn't be possible. In an effort to celebrate the local heroes in our city of St. Louis, we've named our two mass spectrometers after two St. Louis natives:

"Stan" after Stan Musial, famous for his work on and off the baseball diamond with the St. Louis Cardinals and

"Jackie" after Jackie Joyner-Kersee, former Olympian and current philanthropist.

Our previous Mass Spec "Maya" (now retired) was named after Maya Angelou, famous poet and Civil Rights Activist.

"Stan"

About Stan Musial

Hall of Famer Stan Musial played 22 years for the St. Louis Cardinals and is considered to be one of the greatest hitters in baseball history. Stan was also widely loved for his leadership and service, for which he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.

"Jackie"

About Jackie Joyner-Kersee

Jackie Joyner-Kersee, an East St. Louis Native, is a philanthropist and former Olympic Track and Field athlete. She has won six Olympic Medals at four different Olympics. She has held the world record for the heptathlon since 1988. Her foundation works to ensure every youth in East St. Louis has the chance to succeed in academics and athletics
